To Elaine,
I read your message about your son Jack. My daughter has charge. I think that I began to grow worried about her lack of height when she was about 5. At 6 years she was 110cm at 7 years 104 cms. and then stopped growing!
I found the whole issue very distressing and just ignored it for a couple of years. However, we saw an endocrinologist. First you have to wait for 6 months to let them see the growth situation, then if there is very little growth tests are undertaken. This was a particularly awful time for me. However, the results showed that my daughter is growth hormone deficient. With a lot of support from the Child Growth Foundation. I decided that she should start treatment. She's been on treatment for 6 months.
She has an injection everynight. The results have been amazing. She just started to change straight away. Her whole body responded. Her muscles have developed, she is putting on weight. Her shoe size changed and then she started to grow upwards.
We are not tall people, but clearly it was the lack of hormone that was preventing her growth and overall development. I am sure she will have to be assisted to go through puberty, but I do not have any worries about that, because I will be aware of it and start thinking and talking to the consultants well in advance so that we fully understand all the implications.
