my son was born with a sprengle deformity of the left shoulder. He had the deformity corrected at 3 years of age. We discovered it at one year. His left shoulder blade is about 2/3 the size of the right one. He has no other associated abnormalities. He was born at 9 1/2 pounds and is still as strong as an ox. However his shoulder is still up in the air about 1 inch over the other and of course the clavicle is affected still. He is 8 years old now. When they dissected the muscles from the spine to lower the shoulder blade , they also removed a large omnivertebral bone connecting his shoulderblade to his vertebrae. I have wondered about diet during pregnancy because I am a HUGE milk drinker and it was an extra bone that they removed(calcium) I'm talking about a gallon a day and icecream also. However, my mother in law did deliver by cesarean (full term fetal death) in the late 70's (found this out after my son's birth) a girl of about 4 pounds with deformity of the hands(thumb missing on one hand and thumb poorly articulated on other hand) and heart. The autopsy report also says that all limbs seem to be held at an odd angle. I am of course wondering about a genetic connection because children with sprengle's often have more deformities lower on the limb. I am concerned about my son's future and his children and whether or not he just happened to get a lucky break with the isolated deformity of the shoulder and no other problems. I had excellent excellent nutrition during the pregnancy and have never taken a drink or smoke in my life. I am also very healthy and gained 50 pounds during the pregnancy. I am just wondering what anyone else who knows anything has to say about my information. Basically, I am wondering if he made out well in utero because of an optimal environment and whether it could have turned out much worse.
